As we begin a new academic year, the PTA is working to find new ways to insure that all parents have ready access to information about our school and children. One step is what you see here: a new web site operated and created by the I.S. 30 PTA.
The web site is very much a work in progress, and probably will be for much of the 2011-12 academic year as we work toward added content to the web site. As time goes on, we expect that you will be able to find school handouts including PTA notices, minutes, and budgets, links to teacher blogs (for those who have them), event schedules, and useful academic and parenting information and links.
We're ambitious in what we hope to achieve, but ultimately, how well we do both here on the web site and in the halls of the school will depend on your involvement with both your children and all of the I.S. 30 community. Questions about involvement? Contact me and let me know how you'd like to be involved!
Although the potluck had to be cancelled, the Mother's Day and Plant Sale on Thursday and Friday May 10-11 is still on during the day (lunch periods). Students who want to purchase something should bring their money on those days.
Due to scheduling conflict, the potluck for this Friday, May 11, has to be cancelled. We'd really like to have this as it's one of the highlights of the year. So, the executive committee will discuss an alternate date, but for now we have to simply cancel it.
This event was mentioned in the newsletter that went home earlier this week, but the weather for tonight is not supposed to clear out, so the only thing to see tonight will be the clouds. The full announcement can be found on astrofoto.org.
Some of you remember the Teen Biz 3000 reading program (which is really the Achieve 3000 program). They've come up with a science version of the same reading program allowing students to learn science content even if their reading skills still need work. As a parent, I'm very excited by this program. Too often I see my own children stumble and tune out when they hit too many unfamiliar terms or sentence structure that is just too complex for them to follow.
The Salvadori Center will be running an 8-week LEAD program (Learning through Engineering, Architecture, and Design) in cooperation with I.S. 30 faculty starting May 3rd. Students will investigate and explore the beauty and logic of bridges through hands-on / minds-on activities aligned to the social studies, math, ELA and science standards. Students will learn about various types of bridges and develop the skills and understanding to design and construct their own bridge.
Friday, April 20th, from 5 to 8 pm, if you take take the attached coupon to Pudgie/Nathans/Authur Treachers at 6819 3rd Avenue (between 68th Street and Bay Ridge Avenue), 15% of your order will be donated to the I.S. 30 PTA! You can eat it or take out, but no other coupons can be used with this fund raiser. Copies of the coupon will be going home, but if you want extras to give to friends, print them from here. Remember, this is only good for that one evening during that time window.
Today, nurses from Lutheran Hospital brought their O.R. in the Classroom program to I.S. 30 for an introduction to what happens in the hospital operating room as well as a bit of career education. The students and staff were enthusiastic about participating in this interactive program.

Our Book Fair will run from Feb. 15 - Mar 2. Yes, that's a long time, but it will actually be in two parts. On Feb. 15-16, students will get previews of available books. Sales will begin on Feb. 17, but then we have the winter break. Sales will resume for the week of Feb. 27-Mar. 2, after the break.
You can also find information on the Scholastic I.S. 30 Book Fair web site.
